Many of the oldest surface rocks on Earth are found in the Pilbara. The vast region in Western Australia also recently produced ancient evidence of life when fossilised microbes that lived 3.5 billion years ago were discovered in sandstone. This geological richness is a boon for scientists but also for the mineral mining companies that tap enormous deposits of iron ore. Many of Western Australia's national parks help protect endangered wildlife and the homelands of the Aboriginal peoples who've inhabited the region for some 40,000 years. And while the weather in the Pilbara is some of the world's hottest and driest, it's also vulnerable to ravaging cyclones that periodically flood the landscape.
