Based on all these paintings, and photos of similar... my guess is that this is/was a real setting, and not an idyllic landscape.
I just cant pinpoint it specifically.

Perhaps you have found these already (you are very good at where-is-this), but I had fun looking. It's a nice painting. I hope it brings you happy memories of your grandfather.

Hi Daniel,
My guess is that this is in Tyrol Region of the Alps, and perhaps specifically Ulten Valley or Karwendel. I found several other paintings of nearly the identical cabin, pond and mountains... most from 1920s, but some back in 1850s. Thought I'd find "the" original painting by a Master that others have emulated, but to no avail. The older cabins in the Ulten valley in South Tyrol Italy have roofs with rocks on top, to hold the tile roofs down in high winds, necessary due to the large eaves of those italian cabins.
